Implement Shed

Picture
The Implement Shed is located outside the north door of the Hiatt Building and to the left.  The Beet Wagon located in the shed is a symbol of Colorado's history that no longer exists.  After irrigation canals were dug in the 1880s sugar beets became a cash crop.  In the first quarter of the 20th Century, colorado attained the rank of being the Number One state in the production of sugar beets.  At one time, there were seventeen sugar "manufacturers" in the State, including Rocky Ford, Sugar City and Swink.  The building also includes farm machinery of yesterday.

Colorado's hot days and cool nights were ideal for raising beets, although they were a very labor intensive crop.  The restored wagon by Ernie Orahood was how the beets were hauled to the "beet dumps" along the railroad.
