Dear Friends of the Otero Museum.
Thanks to generous community supporter like you and volunteers, our accomplishments continue.
We are finally fully air conditioned and heated in the newly named Don Lowman Building and U. L. Hiatt Shop. The Don Lowman building is named to honor a founding member and long-time Museum Board president, and the U. L. Hiatt Shop is named to honor Mr. Hiatt as a long time Historical Society member and shop teacher at La Junta High School.
We are grateful to Jerry Gonzales and crew for repairing and painting the exterior of the Wickham House. Our displays are kept clean by the untiring efforts of Malle Schindler and Barbara Bravo. As always we could not be open in the summer without our dedicated tour guides.
The Museum has an extensive collection of local school memorabilia including annuals dating back 100 years, school census records, PTA scrapbooks, and graduation programs. We have scrapbooks from many civic clubs and professional organizations, an a collection of family histories. We encourage class reunions and families to come to the Museum and access these collections.
By the late 1800s the Mennonite community had established a medical presence here, and we are proud to recorgnize those contribution in our medical display. Carrie Schindler Cutrell, Bob & Diane Fowler have contributed many new items to this area. We appreciate Esther Heatwole's gift of annuals and materials from the Mennonite School of Nursing. Gratitude to Dr. Kent Gay for labeling and organizing the medical display and items from the office of Dr. R. L. Davis.
Ledia Torrez Ayala and others created a new display for us highlighting New Addition and Wickham Addition. Our community's railroaders continue to to grow through donations to our historic railroading display. Our agriculture displays continue to grow through donations.
Unique to our Museum is a comprehensive collection of the La Junta Army Air Base and Training Site, and the community's wartime efforts.
Gratefully
